BIRTH RATES:
Many countries often focus on reducing the birth rate in their countries. China for example has a one child policy where persons are allowed to ONLY have one child. If a couple has more than one child, then they must pay heavy taxes for any extra children they have. One of the major side-effects of such a policy is a high abortion rate in countries that promote this policy.
However, there are cases when a country may actually want to increase the number of births in their country since their country may become underpopulated, they may end up with an ageing population or (to the extreme) their population may become extinct. Countries such as Denmark, Singapore, South Korea, Russia, Japan and Romania all suffer a low birth rate. In countries such as these, many women and men opt NOT to have any children because they prefer to work, further their education or just decide not to have any. Some of the ways that governments can increase their birth rates include incentives and policies such as:
- Taxes for no births - If you do not give birth to any children, they will penalize you by charging you exorbitant or outrageous taxes.
- Gifts for having babies - In some countries they may give you TVs, fridges, cars, and other gifts to have a baby.
- Provide incentives for the unborn child - such as diapers and baby products, free tuition for education, and even extra money. Yes, they pay you to have a child!
- Extra maternity and paternity leave - instead of 3 months, they may give 3 years so that both parents could stay at home to take care of their baby.
- Provide day care centres at work - many people do not want to leave their children alone for too long, so several businesses would provide day care centres so that parents could be closer to their children.
- Lights out! - Governments stop work at a certain time to encourage time off for people to stay at home and spend time with their significant other.
