Divali Celebrations October 22nd 2014
In commemorating the Hindu festival of Divali 2014, some students put on a mini-fashion show and dance for the students during assembly at school. In order to bring the topic of culture a reality to the students and to simultaneously promote cultural diversity, acceptance and tolerance, I decided to let my 5 Science class celebrate Divali by partaking in a small lunch of mini-roti and phulourie and I gave them deyas as a gift to remember the importance of Divali: "light over darkness." I also told them the story of Divali, which includes the tale of Ram & Sita. They were given the opportunity to dress in East Indian wear as a sign of respect of other religions and cultures. Excellent job 5 Science!
